The Gallery

We believe that photographers live and die by their prints ... and that an online gallery of photographs shouldn't be taken too seriously. This belief allows us to be exuberant and eclectic in choosing which images to present.
We have included paintings, panoramic landscapes of Somerset, informal visual records of our immediate environment, technical studies and some experimental work. Where indicated, fine art limited edition prints are available for sale, mounted and framed to archival quality standards.
Abstractions

In this strand of our work we are using a combination of modern technology and classic lensless imaging in order to soften and dissolve the details of form and structure; this allows the emergence of a striking visual essence of almost pure light and shade.

Image degradation
Semiotics tells us that the photograph is an index of something that was, not of something which is. In this respect, the photograph is similar to footsteps and tracks. Although both the photograph and the trace reference a bygone event, the trace remains spatially and temporally fixed, whereas the photographic signifier is both omnitemporal and omnispatial.
Well, up to a point. The materiƩl of a photographic image inevitably degrades. This observation is explored further in the Exhibition notes.
Landscapes

We find endless fascination in photographing the Somerset landscape. We'll happily revisit a place over and over again in order to photograph the same scene under different skies and in different lights, trying to capture what it is that strikes us as special about that particular scene.
Because of this, our landscape photographs are as much about the light as they are about the landscape.
Please see the Exhibition Notes for more information.
Pinhole and Zone Plate section

In pinhole photography, the camera lens is replaced by a tiny hole, light passes through the hole and forms an image in the camera. Pinhole photographs have a pure geometric perspective and the definition of each part of the image is rendered equally, everything is in focus.
Pinhole images tend towards low contrast and soft definition. In conjunction with the long exposure required to form a pinhole image, these characteristics can impart a timeless quality to the subject. Please see the Exhibition notes for more information.
Impressions

Work in progress ... we are in the process of setting up a new exhibition. Please mind the wet paint and scaffolding.

Heteroperspective 1

Original works by Ngaio Macfarlane, acrylic on canvas. Detailed studies of wildlife creatures taken out of their natural environment and presented mostly against a plain blue ground.
Alone and unsupported on the canvas, with the deep blue of infinity beyond, the creatures display a commanding and challenging presence which not only creates a deeply striking image but at the same time, forcefully reminds us that they have as much a right to exist as we do ourselves.
